Amanda Niehaus

I have a MSc in Ecology and a PhD in Physiological Ecology, am a former ARC Early Career Fellow in the biological sciences, and am the author of numerous award-winning short stories, essays, and the acclaimed novel The Breeding Season (Allen & Unwin, 2019). I have just started a second PhD, in Creative Writing, to study the writing and reading of science in fiction.

Since 2018, I’ve worked with academics, university administrators, and business owners to write clearer, more impactful grants, fellowship and job applications, and other documents.

I can help you find and showcase the ‘story’ of the project in a way that engages readers—making them want to publish your work, cite it, or give you all the money!

I have worked with academics across the sciences and humanities to craft successful grants and fellowship applications, including:

  • A $35mil Centre of Excellence bid

  • ARC Laureate, Future, & DECRA research fellowships

  • ARC Discovery, Discovery Indigenous, & Linkage research grants

  • Australia Council for the Arts grants

  • and more!

I have worked with university leaders to develop and communicate

  • Faculty Research Themes

  • School Review documents

  • University-wide transdisciplinary courses

  • a UQ-wide staff survey

  • Student Strategy documents and presentations,

  • and more!

I also mentor students, professionals, and academics to help them improve storytelling technique, clarity of message, and writing efficiency.

I want to help you bring your ideas and outcomes to more people, more effectively, and with less pain. I actually LOVE doing this kind of work, and I’m quick, ethical, and an outstanding listener. So let’s get started, shall we?
